Spring School

The 6th Spring School of Scottish Dancing 2019 - the most outstanding and the most important event in the Scottish Dancing Culture in Russia - was held in Kazan from May 1 to May 5.

The School program included the workshops in all styles of Scottish Dancing: Scottish Country Dancing, Highland dancing, Ladie’s step and Cape Breton Dancing. The workshops were taught by the best teachers from the whole world. There were also Highland Dancing competitions (according to the SOBHD rules) and in the competition of the SCD Demonstration teams.

Our dancers come from all parts of Russia. Most of them are young and energetic. They often haven't got financial opportunity to go to St Andrews school or international workshops, so for them our school is the only possibility to get aquainted with famous teachers and to maintain high RSCDS standards. This allows our participants from distant areas to learn from the best practices and inspires them for continuing study of Scottish dancing and spreading Scottish culture around.

We were glad to see experienced dancers as well as beginners from all around the world. This would allow our participants to become acquainted with different traditions and schools of Scottish dancing.

With rich history, deep culture and strong economic influence, Kazan holds the title of "The Third Capital of Russia" (after Moscow and Saint Petersburg). By many measures, Kazan has the one of the highest standards of living in Russia. Located between Europe and Asia, having both Russian and Tatar populations, Kazan peacefully blends Muslim and Christian cultures. This vibrant city with over 1000 years of history is an excellent travel destination, and the number of tourists visiting it is rapidly increasing every year.

Teachers

Ron Wallace

Ron is an outstanding dance instructor and devisor who has a great amount of knowledge and experience to share with us.

Now he lives in California and teaches Scottish Country, Highland, and Step Dances. His name is famous among Scottish dancers from all around the world as he leads many workshops in USA, Canada, Europe and Australia, including RSCDS Summer Schools in St. Andrews and TAC Summer Schools in Canada, and judges competitions.

Ron has never visited Russia before, but he is widely known and admired here as SCD and Step dance deviser, accomplished performer and composer of dance music. Russian dancers are quite eager to meet him and to learn from him. And Ron is excited to visit our country and to get acquainted with us.

Ron is going to teach Scottish Country, Step and Cape Breton Dancing at our School.

Gábor Turi

Gábor got in touch with SCD in Hungary in 1986 and his relationship lasts continuously since then. He was the founder of the Budapest SCD Club, first chairman, teacher and leader of the organisation committee for the popular biennial Budapest International Weekend Courses for more than a decade. He gained his full teaching certificate in 2001 and he is regularly teaching from that time. At the beginning he taught all the classes in Hungary which kept him busy 2-3 times a week but as the next generation grown up in the group and took over some of the regular teaching duties from him he was able to look for other challenges as well. He started to teach at day classes or weekend courses in other countries and also became a founding member of the International Team for Newcastle Festival with whom he won more than 10 trophies in the last 10 years including the Maurice Cooper trophy for the overall highest score as a member of the dancing team or later as a coach for mixed, men’s or even children’s teams.

Gábor is not only a country dance teacher but a dance devisor as well, his dances already turned up at evening dances and balls in many countries worldwide. He is member of the Budapest Scottish Dance Club and the Viennese Branch of The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society. In recognition of his outsanding service and loyalty to the RSCDS he was presented with the Society’s Scroll of Honour in 2018.

Gábor will teach Scottish Country Dancing at our School.

Deryck Mitchelson

Deryck is one of the most famous Highland Dance teachers in the world. He won six Highland Dancing World Championships (in 1985, 1986, 1988, 1991, 1994 and 1995). He is also SOBHD judge and UKA examiner.

Deryck was born in a family of dancers, and he can’t remember himself without dance in his life. His first teacher was his mother Wilma Tolmie — Highland Dancing champion in 1965. His older brother Gareth won four Highland Dancing World Championships. Besides judging, teaching and participating in SOBHD, Deryck maintains Toeandheel.com website, which is widely known among Highland dancers. He also plays piano in Cutting Edge Ceilidh Band.

Deryck is going to visit Russia for the first time. This is a great honour for our country and exciting news for everyone interested in Highland and Scottish National dancing.

Deryck will be judging Highland competitions and teaching Highland classes at our school.

Yulia Tkacheva

Yulia has been dancing Scottish dances since 2004. She has been teaching in RSCDS Moscow Branch School since 2007. In 2009 Yulia took the teaching course by Anne Taylor (United Kingdom) and passed the exams for the first part of the teaching certificate. In July 2014 she attended Unit 5 course by Wendy Jaeger (New Zealand) and Rebecca Blackhall-Peters (Canada), successfully passed final exam and received RSCDS Full Teaching Certificate. Now she is the main teacher in Moscow Scottish Country Dancing School.

She regularly gives workshops in different towns of Russia - from Sant Petersburg to Khabarovsk.

She is not only a great teacher, she is also a brilliant organizer. Yulia organized many RSCDS Moscow Branch events, including yearly Moscow Ball, ceilidh dancing evenings and charity performances. She is a cofounder and irreplaceable member of the organisation committee of Spring School in Russia.

One of her main interests is preparing new teachers. Yulia has organized 3 teacher's courses with exams. She did her best to support the candidates and provide them with all necessary information. She also has been a mentor for Unit 4 exams for the half of the certified RSCDS teachers in Russia.

Yulia will teach Cape Breton for beginners at our School.

Musicians

Ian Muir

Ian started playing the accordion at school when he was 12 and playing for dances with his own band at the age of 14. At the age of 17 he was lucky enough to be invited to join McBain’s Band, one of the South’s of England’s most popular Scottish country dance bands at the time. In 1986 he formed his own band and since its inception the band has been well received both in the UK and abroad. The band has appeared twice on BBC television, and has broadcast twice on Radio Scotland’s Take the Floor dance programme.

Ian’s philosophy for the band has always been that the musical arrangements the band uses in its repertoire must be as good to listen to as they are to dance to and that the future of the music lies in encouraging youngsters. Ian is also a keen composer and many of his compositions have been published and recorded by other Scottish dance bands, and several have been adopted as originals for dances. As a solo musician Ian has played the accordion for classes and day schools and has been a member of the Summer School at St Andrews staff for the last 6 years. He is the current Musical Director of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society.

Ian played at School 2017. This year he will play at joint classes and evening events.

Judith Muir

Judith has an historical family interest in Scottish traditional music. She started playing in a family band and, after briefly joining the Craigellachie Scottish Dance Band in the late 1980s, Judith left and co-formed Sound Company (a three-piece Scottish Dance Band based in the south of England). For the following 15 years Sound Company played all over the UK and Europe, including a number of trips to the Shetland Fiddle and Accordion Festival. Following Sound Company’s retirement in 2003, Judith re-joined Craigellachie.

Judith has considerable experience playing for classes: she is the resident musician at the BHS Border Branch Technique Class, has played for numerous RSCDS day and weekend schools, including the New Zealand Summer School, Australian Winter School, and St Andrews Summer Schools. She is also the pianist with The Craigellachie Band. In her «spare» time she is involved in barn owl conservation, and has recently taken up beekeeping.

Judith played at School 2017. This year she will play at joint classes and evening events.

We are happy to invite you to our 7th Spring School of Scottish Dancing 2019 - the most outstanding and the most important event in the Scottish Dancing Culture in Russia. The School will be held in Kolomna from April 30 to May 4.

The School program includes the workshops in Scottish Country Dancing and Cape Breton Dancing. We also invite you to participate in the competition of the SCD Demonstration teams.

The fifth anniversary Spring School of Scottish Dancing 2017 was held in Kazan from May 5 to May 9. There was record number of 184 participants from all parts of Russia. This year we also had first guests from abroad. There were many beginners from the cities that never participated in previous schools, so we can say that the popularity of Scottish dancing in our country is constantly growing.

The School program included the workshops in all styles of Scottish Dancing: 22 hours of Scottish Country Dancing, 8 hours of Highland dancing and 12 hours of Ladie’s step and hard shoe dancing. Fiona Grant taught step dancing and gave two SCD classes, the rest of SCD was taught by Malcolm Brown and James Stott. Famous Deryck Mitchelson was the teacher of Highland Dancing.

11 brave dancers from different cities attended two week teachers course with James Stott and took exams for the RSCDS Teaching Certificate Part 1 (Units 2 and 3).

As in previous years, the Highland Dancing competition (according to the SOBHD rules) and UKA exams were ogranized.

For most of the classes we had live music by outstanding Ian and Judith Muir. They also played at our ball on May 7 and at social dancing on May 8. Their fiery music will be long remembered by our dancers. Anatoly Isaev from Russia played for the Highland Competition.

In addition, we also had a festival of Scottish Country Dancing display teams, adjudicated by Malcolm Brown. This year there were 4 teams from Nizhny Novgorod, Cheboksary, Saint Petersburg and Krasnodar. Team 'Sinn Araon' from Krasnodar took the first place in the prescribed dance cathegory. 'Quick Scotch' from Nizhny Novgorod won first place in the display dance cathegory.

School was a great success and we can't wait for the next year's school!

Teachers

Fiona Grant

Fiona likes to dance, especially to Scottish music. Many years ago while a student she joined Edinburgh University New Scotland Country Dance Society and got so hooked on Scottish Country Dancing that she danced her way to the University Award in Physical Education and then took the RSCDS certificates.

Since moving to Bristol, she has dipped her toes into Scottish step dance, English clog, Salsa, Flamenco, Arabic, Ballroom, Le-roc, Tango Argentino and Irish sets, but has never escaped from the lure of Scottish Country Dance. As a member of the RSCDS in Bristol she has been treasurer and edited the branch newsletter, and taught a weekly class for Westbury Scottish Club. She has served on the RSCDS Finance and General Purposes Committee, has taught at the RSCDS summer school in St Andrews, and has tutored dancers for the Dancing Achievement Award. She is an enthusiastic itinerant dancer and publicist for the RSCDS, an active member of the RSCDS International Branch, and is happy to travel miles to hear a fine band play and join in the dance. She especially likes to encourage others to dance, and has taught dancing in Scotland, England, Wales, the Channel Islands, France, Luxembourg, Spain, Russia, South Africa, Canada and USA.

Russian dancers know her very well and admire her. In 2003 she organized the Scottish landing on the shores of Black Sea in Kuban with a week of workshops and dancing. In 2012 she gave a week-end workshop in Moscow.

Fiona taught Scottish Country, Step, Cape Breton and other hard shoe dancing at our School.

Malcolm Brown

Almost every dancer in Russia knows Malcolm. Many of us became acquainted with Scottish Dancing because of him.

Since 1972, when he got his teaching certificate, Malcolm has been taking part in lots of dancing schools and events in the UK and around the globe, including Europe, USA, Japan and Australia. He has been on the Management Board of the Society and now he is a Convenor of the Education and Training Committee. In 2012 he was awarded the Society’s Scroll of Honour in recognition of his services to Scottish Country Dancing. Malcolm is also known as the author of several dances.

Malcolm often visits Russia and his classes are always eagerly awaited by dancers. In 2013 he tutored students of the First Russian Spring School of Scottish Dancing in 10 day course for Part 1 of the teaching certificate.

James S. Stott

James knows everything about teaching. His contribution to development and life of the RSCDS is enormous and invaluable.

James has been dancing since 1965. He has participated in the Demonstration Team of the RSCDS Aberdeen Branch several times. Since receiving of the teaching certificate in 1994 he has been teaching in Aberdeen. Being the youth coordinator in the NE of Scotland he organized many events for young dancers. He was a member of the Youth Services Committee, the Education and Training Committee and the Management Board. He has taught many times on RSCDS Winter and Summer Schools. In particular, in 2013 James was a tutor on the RSCDS Unit 5 course in Saint Andrews. In 2015 James became the director of the RSCDS Summer School in Saint Andrews. He is also an adjudicator at the Newcastle Festival of Scottish Country Dancing. He leads many workshops throughout the whole world, including Europe, North America and Japan.

James was a tutor for Unit 2 and Unit 3 courses at our School. He also taught the final Scottish Country Dancing workshop.

Deryck Mitchelson

Deryck visited Russia for the first time. This is a great honour for our country and exciting news for everyone interested in Highland and Scottish National dancing.

Deryck judged Highland competitions and taught Highland classes at our school.

Demonstration Team Festival had two parts: prescribed dance (two dances - a slow and a fast one - were selected randomly a month before the School for each team) and a display dance. The adjudicator was Malcolm Brown. He noted that all teams performed very well and the display dances were very spectacular.

We are happy to invite you to our Spring School of Scottish Dancing 2018. For 6 years our School has been the most outstanding and the most important event in the Scottish Dancing Culture in Russia. The School will be held in Anapa from May 9 to May 15.

The School program includes the workshops in all styles of Scottish Dancing: Scottish Country Dancing, Highland dancing, Ladie’s step and Cape Breton Dancing. The workshops will be taught by the best teachers from the whole world.

This year we want to give our participants the feel of St Andrews Summer School, but in Russia. The classes and accomodation are in the "De La Mapa Hotel", located at the Black Sea!

Accommodation

Participants are accommodated in the De La Mapa Hotel.
